So why does Europe produce more experimental, sculpturally-driven jewelry ? Or does it? The sheer size of the craft economy in the U.S. means that we are inundated with images of more marketable jewelry . This may cause us to underestimate the scope and impact of more conceptual streams of work. Does it relate to a difference in teaching philosophy? Not necessarily. From talking with educators, a few things are clear. It is common for American students to prefer technical information over the conceptual. Also, faced with fewer opportunities for government-funded grants after graduation, students may push themselves to develop work that can translate easily into production. However, there has been academic crossover for years, and similar teaching concepts have found their way into universities here and abroad.

The difference is not so much in the type of work we make, but in the environment it encounters once it leaves the studio. Americans are involved in plenty of experimental work that gets lost when we rely on traditional galleries to sell it to their existing collector base. By and large, European jewelers are more engaged in marketing their work in a way that seems to be a natural extension of the original process, rather than an afterthought.

From a socio-political perspective, something about the American, unilateral way of life also gets mixed into the equation. The ever-increasing consumption necessary for economic growth creates a view of jewelry as commodity and encourages specialization. For Europeans, freedom is found not in autonomy but in embeddedness. To be free is to have access to many interdependent relationships. The more communities one has access to, the more options one has for living a full and meaningful life. It is inclusivity that brings security--belonging not belongings.
